I love these people and someday we will all workout together again.
It is very, easy in our current situation, to focus on what's out of our control and become obsessed with the negative. One thing we can control is our words. A common word I hear used these days is "but." You've heard it, too. Someone says something and then here comes the qualifier, but. When that word is used in a sentence, it negates everything said before it. For example, I'm really happy to be social distancing and doing my part to flatten the curve, but I miss my friends. You're not really happy and you really do miss your friends. That's the point of what you're saying. It's OK to miss your friends. I miss mine, too. We can reword our sentence this way, I'm really happy to be social distancing and doing my part to flatten the curve, and I miss my friends. Now BOTH things are true. You miss your friends, and apparently you're happy to be distancing. Using "and" instead of "but" is a small and (you thought I was going to write but, didn't you?) powerful change in our word choice that will have a positive ripple effect on our mindset and outlook. Try it today. Every time you're about to say, "but," replace it with the word, "and," and see how much more positive your mindset becomes.

Remember how fun it was to run together? We will run together again someday.
This week is, for many of us, our first full week working from home. You're going to encounter obstacles and challenges. The best thing you can do to help make this transition as smooth as possible is to keep to your regular schedule as much as you are able. As part of our remote coaching program, on Sunday and/or Monday all of you are asked to schedule your training sessions for the week and let your remote coach when (day and time) you plan to workout. This is a positive practice for a few reasons. You plan a time dedicated to your fitness and make a commitment to yourself. You also enable your remote coach to hold you accountable. A major benefit to attending group classes is the accountability. All of your gym buddies and your coach notice when you're absent and we follow-up with you. With all of us hunkering down at home, it's easy to become isolated and withdrawn. Your remote coach is a consistent buzzing in your ear. You can expect multiple emails, texts, FaceTime calls and Facebook check-ins with us as we help you stay healthy and active during the Covid-19 crisis. We're in this together, and our coaches are not going to let you drift off into the deep, dark pit of self isolation. You've been working from home in your bathrobe all week. It's time to wash it:-)
Your one thing to do today (aside from washing your stinky bathrobe) is to measure and mark a 200 and 400 meter running/walking course. This can be at your home, or it can be at a local park. It can also be at the high school track, or athletic fields. You will need a known 200m distance, along with your jump rope, for tomorrow's workout. While we are closed we will not be programming an at-home workout on the weekend.
We certainly value the importance of social distance, but not isolation. We have a big, expansive, safe wilderness that can provide much needed healing. So, get outside today. Go someplace you've never been before. Seek out the solitary places. Distance yourself from society by going into the wild! |
