Marianne, Why Do You Do CrossFit?1. What was your fitness life like before you started training with True Spirit CrossFit?
I was active with a regular schedule of pilates, hiking and some gym work. I've struggled with an old adductor injury for many years, therefore, never considered CF. When my husband started and suggested I do as well, my physical therapy people basically ordered me not to, stating my leg wouldn't hold up. Over time, though, I wanted to be challenged more and improve my strength so I decided to give it a go. 2. What brought you to True Spirit CrossFit in the first place? My husband's explanation of how TSCF modified movements to accommodate injury and that some older adults were participating and thriving. In addition, I was needing to find a new exercise option that improved my strength. 3. What was your first impression? Has that changed? I was impressed with the age range of participants, particularly the oldest ones some of whom are amazingly strong and fit. But, more importantly, I was immediately comforted that my injury could and would be accommodated and that I could proceed gradually and at my own pace. I am constantly challenged and encouraged to push past my comfort zone but I feel secure when I do. None of that has changed. 4. What was the first thing fun or positive thing you experienced while training with us? I feel a sense of playful challenge and competition which I didn't expect both within myself and between the coaches and others in class. There is a comaraderie that adds fun and propels me. 5. Are you working on any special CrossFit related skill now? Pull ups and double unders. 6. How has you life changed since training with TSCF? I am absolutely stronger and have more stamina/endurance. I can hike longer, I can JOG some, and yes I have increased confidence and vitality. 7. What's your favorite True Spirit CrossFit memory? Hmmm probably completing my first Murph, though the festive and fun Christmas workouts are a close 2nd.

John Cochran, Why do You Train at True Spirit?1. What was your fitness life like before you started training with True Spirit CrossFit?
I had not had a training program in my life since I was in my mid 20's. I was intimidated by the word "crossfit" and thought that there was no way I could even get started. I had watched the competitions on tv occasionally and was so far from that place. 2. What brought you to True Spirit CrossFit in the first place? I slowly got more and more out of shape while chasing dollars and working on a computer. Long days and lots of hours working put me in a tough spot. I hated the public gym scene and could never stay motivated on my own. I saw a short video on Facebook and after watching all the drug commercials then law suits from the drugs over and over on tv sent me to TSCF. I was intimidated and unsure but Leslie was accommodating and supportive and helped me get going. 3. What was your first impression? Has that changed? My first impression was that I was joining a family of like minded people who were supportive and helpful to each other through fitness. There is nothing intimidating about TSCF and is an enjoyable part of my life. 4. What was the first thing fun or positive thing you experienced while training with us? I love rowing! Im also much stronger than I was 2 years ago and much more flexible and mobile. I can pursue my outdoor activities with no fear and I feel like Im 30 years old. 5. Are you working on any special CrossFit related skill now? I'm working on showing up. That phrase rings in my head all the time. I fish and bird hunt and frequently Im gone for a week but then jump back into the routine. It can be hard if you happen to show back up during a heavy week. Ive survived over 200 classes and I look forward to the next 200. 6. How has you life changed since training with TSCF? I feel much better than I did. My mobility and flexibility are way better and I still have a long way to go. I just keep trying and working on my skills slowly and with as much consistency as possible. 7. What's your favorite True Spirit CrossFit memory? My favorite memory was a recent 360 deadlift workout that I absolutely felt 100% and did well. I felt like I belonged in that place at that moment. Most of the time I feel like a fish out of water flopping around on the floor in the gym. Yes struggling for air the whole time! Train your WeaknessesWe coaches get asked frequently how long it will take someone to do something as prescribed. Or how long it will take to improve in CrossFit. Our answer is always, "It depends." Not satisfying, we know.
It really does depend though. It depends on your current level of conditioning, it depends on how consistently you attend classes, it depends on how much extra work you put towards skill development by taking specialty seminars, skill sessions or private training. It depends on how well you eat, how well you recover, how many hours you sleep. It depends on your lifestyle. However, our good friends at Beyond the Whiteboard, who are data geeks like us, have crunched the numbers for us. They looked at Fitness Level data from over 65,000 athletes over the past 6 years and analyzed it to see how long it takes to increase your Fitness Level. They found, on average, it takes 5-6 months of consistent CrossFit to improve your Fitness Level by 10 points. The only challenge with using your BTWB Fitness Level to track your improvement or transformation is that it's dependent upon you completing a workout as prescribed. Not all of us are at that level, yet. Repeating workouts is an excellent way to see if you've increased your fitness. CrossFit defines fitness as increased work capacity. Before we found CrossFit, most of us lacked an observable, measurable and repeatable definition of fitness. We thought we were fit if we felt better or looked better. Sure, those are aspects of fitness, but they are aspects that are hard to measure. One of the benefits of CrossFit training is the measurement of fitness through how fast we run or row, how many unbroken pull-ups or double unders we can do, how much weight we can deadlift, squat or press, etc. In fact, we try to measure as many fitness variables as we can. While all of these measurements can validate our hard work and help us stay motivated to continue our training, they can also highlight our weaknesses. It takes only about 2 months of consistent CrossFit training for us to be unceremoniously humiliated by our weaknesses. It takes a lot of mental toughness to work on our weaknesses. Its way more fun and wholly enjoyable to work on the things we're good at. But, to deliberately practice what we suck at, well, that takes letting go of our ego and being willing to admit we're not perfect. Why is this so damn hard? Most folks would rather avoid the things they're not good at. But, they remain frustrated and angry when those things come up in a WOD. What are they waiting for, a Festivus miracle? Working on our weaknesses will help increase our mental and physical fitness. Want to be a better person? Work on the things you suck at. Good luck! |
