Annie and Tammy climb the rope. It's Foodie Friday! A few weeks ago I shared these delicious and easy to make slow cooker recipes. Today, I'm sharing Nom Nom Paleo's incredible collection of pressure cooker recipes. Many of us use an Instant Pot for quick meals, and if you're like me, I fall back on the same 4 recipes. Nom Nom Paleo is one of my favorite Paleo recipe resources and I'm so psyched she loves her Instant Pot. I'm beyond excited to share with you her Instant Pot Carnitas. Carnitas is quite possibly my favorite way to eat pork. I love carnitas scrambled into eggs, wrapped in lettuce, and on top of baked sweet potatoes. Smother all of those things with salsa and I'm one happy gal. Enjoy!

Rowing and burpees, such a brutal combination! Dugan make them look easy!
Pacing and consistency are important mental and physical elements of CrossFit and many other athletic endeavors. This is especially so in the long workout like the one from CrossFit Linchpin we are doing today. Often times, after a coach says, "3, 2, 1, GO!" we see people go crazy fast at the start only to seriously slow down as the workout continues. While we love the assertiveness to go for it, many times in CrossFit and life, it's the ability to pace and be consistent that will get you where you want to go. Developing pace and consistency takes practice and mindfulness. During today's workout, pay attention to your breathing, pay attention to your posture, pay attention to what you're doing with your face. The moment you notice that you're body is no longer in a good position, slow down. Once you're recovered, pick up the pace just a little bit. Resist the urge to go breakneck only to breakdown. Keeping a consistent pace that allows you to keep the intensity high is way better than flying and dying. A consistent pace helps with your mental toughness. Knowing that you can keep going, even when it hurts, is a great lesson in CrossFit that translates wonderfully to life. Do you ever Zen out while rowing. Can rowing, running, hiking or cycling be meditative? Tell us what you think in the comments. It's Whole Life Wednesday and this week's Healthy Lifestyle Challenge is to meditate for 10 minutes daily. A meditation challenge has appeared in every WLC, and it's interesting to see some people really take to it and some people really hate it. What is it about sitting quietly for 10 minutes that brings some people joy and some people angst? I started using Insight Timer, a meditation app, after my first WLC. I sometimes use just the timer and do my own quiet meditation, but most often I use a guided meditation. I have so much of my own voice and noise inside my head that I find it calming to listen to someone else's voice. I often wake up in the middle of the night with a whole suite of worries fluttering through my brain. When this happens I select a sleep meditation and within minutes I'm usually back to sleep. Sometimes it takes only a 5 minute guided sleep meditation, sometimes it's takes a 60 minute guided sleep meditation. With Insight Timer I have many choices to help guide me back to sleep. The instructions for our meditation practice are simple:
"We spend most of our time judging and evaluating, consciously or otherwise. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it leaves little room for anything to make a new impression on us. We see something and we immediately know all about it — how it will limit us, what a person must be like, or our presumption of what we’re about to experience. Other good meditations apps to check out are Headspace, The Mindfulness App, and Calm.
Duane lifts to lift heavy. In fact, we just ordered a pair of 100lb metal plates just for him. If you're nice, he'll probably let you use them, too:-) Today's Tuesday Technique video is not at all about deadlifting technique. Instead I thought it would be fun to see the fittest women in the world left some very, very heavy weight at mere 15 minutes after running a grueling 7KM trail run at this year's CrossFit Games. Sometimes, we just need to watch something fun and motivating to get us psyched for a workout. I'm ready to lift heavy after watching this. Are you? Tell us in the comments! |
