9/1 Labor Day Sunday is a Rest Day

"Labor Day, an annual celebration of workers and their achievements, originated during one of American labor history’s most dismal chapters.

In the late 1800s, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States, the average American worked 12-hour days and seven-day weeks in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills, factories and mines across the country, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wages.

People of all ages, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions, with insufficient access to fresh air, sanitary facilities and breaks.

As manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment, labor unions, which had first appeared in the late 18th century, grew more prominent and vocal. They began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay.

Many of these events turned violent during this period, including the infamous Haymarket Riot of 1886, in which several Chicago policemen and workers were killed. Others gave rise to longstanding traditions: On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City, holding the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history.

The idea of a “workingmen’s holiday,” celebrated on the first Monday in September, caught on in other industrial centers across the country, and many states passed legislation recognizing it.Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later, when a watershed moment in American labor history brought workers’ rights squarely into the public’s view. On May 11, 1894, employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives.

On June 26, the American Railroad Union, led by Eugene V. Debs, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars, crippling railroad traffic nationwide. To break the strike, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers.

In the wake of this massive unrest and in an attempt to repair ties with American workers, Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. More than a century later, the true founder of Labor Day has yet to be identified.

Many credit Peter J. McGuire, cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, while others have suggested that Matthew Maguire, a secretary of the Central Labor Union, first proposed the holiday.

Labor Day is still celebrated in cities and towns across the United States with parades, picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays and other public gatherings. For many Americans, particularly children and young adults, it represents the end of the summer and the start of the back-to-school season."

WOOHOOOO! It's the end of the week. Finally it's FRIDAY!
We have only ONE more DAY remaining in our 800g Challenge. We are all feeling better, enjoying more energy, and loving how we feel with the increased vitamins, minerals and fiber with the 800g of fruits and vegetables we are eating every day.
This week's bonus challenge is to eat purple fruits and vegetables. Purple foods are rich in anthocyanins, which are natural plant pigments that provide foods with their fun color. Studies have shown that anthocyanins may benefit brain health, help to lower inflammation, and fight cancer and heart disease. In addition to anthocyanins, purple foods offers other key vitamins and nutrients.
My favorite purple vegetable is eggplant. Eggplant is technically a fruit (Yes! Really! Fruits have seeds and vegetables are the roots, leaves and stems of plants.) Check out this fabulous recipe courtesy of Bon Appetit. Click on the image for the recipe.

Michelle practices the Warrior III.
Coach Glassman challenges us to find fitness through mastering the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Have you noticed we've been practicing scales (holds), L-sits (holds), inversions (holds), planks (holds) and stretching? In fact, today we are practicing the splits. Can you do them? They are included in Coach's original CrossFit charter. Yet, vey few of us can do them.
Let's face it. No one likes "stretching," and none of us do it enough. However, one of our CrossFit goals is to regain our full range of motion and increase our flexibility. Being flexible and have full range of motion of your joints and muscles is as equally important as strength, power, speed, endurance and stamina.

Just like with everything we do in CrossFit, increasing flexibility and range of motion requires regular training. The good news is that we train our flexibility and mobility every day in class. More good news is that you can easily train your flexibility and mobility at home. Do you sit on the couch at home? Do couch stretch!
Regular stretching also has other benefits such as:
  • Stretching gives you a break from stress. The time you spent stretching is time when you can free your mind from your daily troubles.
  • Stretching relieves tension. Stretching can relieve tense muscles and help you loosen tight muscles.
  • Stretching can improve blood flow to your muscles. When you're sore from CrossFit, stretching can help increase blood flow to your muscles which helps them heal.
  • Stretching feels good. I know some of you don't "enjoy" stretching while you're doing it, but when you're done everything usually feels better. The benefits of feeling good should not underrated. When you're stressed out, spend 10 deep breaths in child's pose and notice how much better you feel.
A daily stretching program has benefits for both your body and mind. It might take a while (perhaps years) before you can finally do the splits, but the journey is worth it.
