5/1 Wellness Wednesday

It's a pretty special community we have created at our gym. Where else are you surrounded by people who want to be strong, healthy and happy?
Today's Wellness Wednesday post is about living life LARGE! It's about reframing our mindset from wanting to be smaller to wanting to be capable, useful, and harder to kill. Check out my video with Laini Gray of Gray Star Health.
I love that CrossFit has helped shape a "better beautiful." Women are embracing our strong thighs, our defined shoulders and our visible triceps. We've come a long way, baby!
Laini and I aren't the only Coaches who want you to embrace your strength and power. Check out this article in Breaking Muscle by Emily Beers, CrossFit Games athlete, on how she learned to embrace her muscles.

4/39 Transformation Tuesday

Kendra, Why do You do CrossFit?

What was your fitness, CrossFit, or yoga "life" like before you started training with True Spirit CrossFit & Yoga.
Prior to joining TSCF I called myself a runner, one that would cycle in and out of training for a race to not training at all. I still enjoy running, probably more now that I have a greater variety of workouts. Now that I have been doing CrossFit for awhile I am much more consistent in my training.

What brought you to True Spirit CrossFit & Yoga in the first place?
I had heard about CrossFit right after graduating college, I looked at the CrossFit mainsite many times, even doing a modified workout on my own here and there. Years would go by and I wouldn't step foot into a CrossFit gym until finally, it had been so long thinking about starting CrossFit I could have been Veteran by now. I was finally motivated to walk through the doors and it's been the best decision I've made for my health and wellness.

What was your first impression? Has that changed?
My first impression of TSCF was how welcoming the coaches and members were. Veteran CrossFitters introduced themselves as soon as I walked in the door, I felt at ease. That impression hasn't changed and now I aspire to be the one who introduces myself to the new person.

What was the first thing fun or positive thing you experienced while training with us?
The best thing about TSCF is the community and camaraderie of each class. I love cheering people on when they're finishing their WOD, and love when I'm being cheered on to finish a WOD. I'm always inspired by everyone in class.

Are you working on any special CrossFit related skill now?
I'm currently working toward many skills that will help with any WOD. Shoulder mobility has been a big opportunity for me and something I continue to work on. Lifting technique has been an ongoing process that I feel improves a little at a time.

How has you life changed since training with TSCF?
Overall, my health and wellness has improved. I notice I am more capable of putting in long miles on backpacking trips without needing to take as many breaks. I can sign up for run races with little training and mostly rely on CrossFit to be prepared.

What's your favorite True Spirit CrossFit memory?
So many good memories at TSCF: watching JP get his first bar muscle up, having Amanda, Zach, and Leslie cheer me on so hard while doing a flexed arm hang, seeing Dover's face while I thought I was going to pass out from some type of sled drag WOD!

4/29 Myth Busting Monday

Today we start training for Murph!

The Myth of Overtraining

All of us, at some point, have experienced a few days, or even an entire week, where we feel drained from our workouts. Some of us are feeling this way right now after the Festivus Games! Rather than feeling energized and revitalized from a session at the gym we feel sore, crabby and weak. While it's easy to attribute these feelings to "Overtraining," what is most likely happening is that we are "Under-recovering."
Recovering from our workouts and training sessions consists primarily of three important lifestyle practices:
1. SLEEP
2. NUTRITION
3. STRESS MANAGEMENT
If we are not making optimal choices for these three lifestyle practices then we are just not able to recover from the physiological stress of our workouts and training. Check out this excellent short video with Dr. Mike Israetel of Renaissance Periodization & Juggernaut Training Systems. We are capable of adapting to increased volume and intensity only if we put equal effort into our recovery. Good luck!
