Wendy, Why do You do CrossFit?What was your life like before you started CrossFit?
I first started CrossFit in Seattle, after I realized that rowing crew September to December, in the dark, on Lake Union, was not much fun. Also, I was a bicycle commuter for work, and rowing bears too many similarities to bicycling to make for well-rounded fitness. After realizing how much I enjoyed CrossFit, I was happy to join a CrossFit gym after I moved back to Bozeman. What brought you to True Spirit CrossFit in the first place? I started at True Spirit CrossFit after I had spent several months caring for my mother who passed away; and knowing that I was facing surgery for ankle fusion in a few months. I desperately needed regular exercise again; and wanted to become stronger and healthier in order to recover faster from upcoming surgery. What was your first impression? It was so pleasant to walk through the door of a gym that was large, well-lit, and filled with lots of pleasant, welcoming people. I really liked the box I went to in Seattle, but in retrospect it was kind of a dungeon. What was the first thing fun or positive thing you experienced while training with us? I always feel better when I am getting regular exercise than when I’m not. Also, I’ve been pre-diabetic for 13 years, and CrossFit helps keep my body fat lower, and my blood sugar numbers in order, staving off needing medicine for diabetes. Are you working on any special CrossFit related skill now? Right now I am trying to focus on getting better as pull-ups and push-ups. I’m skiing a lot (yeah ski season!) so my legs are getting a good work out, but I want to be sure not to ignore upper body and core strength. How has you life changed since training with TSCF? My legs are definitely stronger than they were last year so I can ski longer and better, with less knee pain. I’m also in need of a double knee replacement, but that’s another event I am keeping at bay with strength and mobility training. What's your favorite True Spirit CrossFit memory? Deadlifting 195 pounds. I really want to deadlift 200 pounds, and haven’t made it there yet, but 195 was pretty sweet.

We had such a great crew for our Femme Fatale Finale on Saturday!
Every Monday, I usually bust a myth, but today I'm inspired to diverge from my regular blogging routine. Today I want to write about motivation. Motivation is an essential component of our spirit. It's what guides our choices. It's the wind in our sails. Many people believe that those who are successful have a deep wellspring of motivation. However, I firmly believe that motivation is developed through a small series of successes. That's right, I think motivation is the product of success, not the other way around. Think about how you feel today, after a phenomenally successful Femme Fatale Week. This is just another Monday. Or is it? Do you feel motivated to tackle today's training with new aplomb? That's because you had a success (or several) last week and now you're motivated. See? Success breeds motivation. Motivation ONLY comes after a win. It rarely precedes it. Think about how you felt a week ago when we all did Gwen (our first Femme.) There was no prescribed weight. All you had to do was pick a weight that was right for you and hold onto that bar! How did you feel when you finished? Yep! Like a super star! That feeling kept you motivated for Karen, Annie, Christine, Fran and Marguerita! Keep your success from last week in the front of your mind as you prepare and plan your training days this week. Remember what you learned. You are stronger that you think. You can make tough choices. Working hard has rewards beyond the physical. Let your success last week be the motivator to tackle this week. Good luck! Did Femme Fatale week leave you flat on your back, gasping for air, wondering what in the hell just happened to you? Yeah, that's the point!
Today is a rest day and thank goodness for that! You learned something important about yourself last week. You learned just how much you can really do. You learned that you're stronger than you think. You learned that you can handle more than 3 workouts in a week. You learned that you can do multiple days in a row. You learned that you have an incredible support system at the gym and that we all think you are terrific! You learned that working hard has rewards beyond the physical. You learned that being capable make you confident. You learned that your TSCF Coaches think you are amazing! Enjoy the day off. Don't worry, tomorrow is perfectly programmed to help you recover from Femme Fatale Week. See you at the gym! #peaceloveandbarbells This is our SIXTH Femme Fatale Week!
