Today, before we do our Metabolic Conditioning, we will practice our gymnastics skills. Practice is essential for skill development, yet so many adults get frustrated and sabotage their development with a bad attitude or a lack of commitment to developing basic skills.
Let's be honest, not many of us did gymnastics or tumbling as a kid. We don't have a terrific foundation of experience hanging from things, being upside down, swinging, and cartwheeling. Therefore, learning very basic gymnastics skills such as the pull-up, muscle-up, handstand push-up, or handstand walking can take a very long time and requires lots and lots of practice.
Learning basic gymnastics skills also takes time because you have to strengthen your ligaments and tendons in addition to strengthening your muscles. Strengthening ligaments and tendons takes significantly more time and practice than strengthening your muscles. You have to start with very basic movements without a lot of load so that you don't blow out your shoulder, wrist, elbow or knee.
Practice is super important and can be a vital part of our adult playtime. Remember when you used to hang and play on the monkey bars for hours as kids? Try tapping into that joy you had as a kid. Too often in our adult lives we have to be serious, responsible, and well "adulting." Think of our gymnastics skill work as your time to be a kid again. Enjoy the process because it's all we have.
Gymnastics skills are way easier to master if you have a high strength to weight ratio. Meaning you're strong relative to your weight.
