Wow! What a crazy two years it's been. On this coronaversary I'm reflecting on the last week in the gym in March 2020 just before everything #shutdown.
Two years ago today I blogged about strategies to help us stay sane amidst the chaos. Sometimes the blog is more for me than it is for you:) Things were changing RAPIDLY that week and I was trying to make the best decisions for your safety and the sustainability of the gym. It was not easy being the #bosslady and I was relying on daily exercise to keep me sane amidst the chaos. As Meg often says, exercise keeps the crazy out. Two years ago this week we all needed to keep the crazy out! So, on this #transformationtuesday I'm exploring the transformation of the gym and our business. How has the coronavirus pandemic impacted us these past 2 years? On paper, the "left-brain" business metrics are dismal. During the first year of the pandemic we lost 15% of our membership. During the second year of the pandemic we slowly, slowly rebuilt and we started March 2022 at the same level of members we had at the beginning of March 2020. Since March 2020 we have struggled with a consistent 30% revenue decrease from pre-pandemic times. In 2021 one of our landlords raised our rent. When we reopened in May 2020 we did so without our full team of in-person coaches. The pandemic impacted our staff and we had to create a new full-time role, Remote Coach, for the 15% of the gym who elected to stick with remote coaching rather than return to the gym for most of 2020. The "right-brain" business metrics are fantastic! We created a new business program and pivoted all our members from in person coaching to our remote coaching program from March 2020-May 2020. We created a new staff position to fully support this new business program. We were able to continue to employ and pay all of our coaches through the #shutdown and reopening. No one lost their job! Thirty-seven (37) members stayed with us through remote coaching and reopening and are important and stable members of our community. We did not have a single case of COVID transmission at the gym. Two years later and there's a shift. Most of our gym members and ALL of our coaches are vaccinated. All of our members who stuck with us are fitter and healthier than 2 years ago. It's been 2 years and we are finally growing. In 2021 we restarted our Coach intern program and brought on Mattias, and MSU student who is majoring in exercise physiology and Nick joined us in the summer of 2021. We started our non-profit Report Ready program to help prepare folks for military basic training. Two years later and we are stronger both physically and mentally. We have the largest participation in the CrossFit Open ever. We are ready to compete, have fun, and kick up our heels a bit (which we all did, over and over, against the wall for 22.1:) Two years later and the end of the pandemic is in our sights. We have returned to partner workouts, sharing a barbell and playing a great round of musical med balls. Thank you for being a vital part of our TSCF community! Without you, we would have closed.
