Shoveling Snow Can Be a Workout!FINALLY WE HAVE SNOW! All this snow brings many benefits not the least of which is an unplanned workout for you! Yes, shoveling all this snow is a legit workout and burns lots of calories. Here's a breakdown from Harvard Health Publishing based on your bodyweight. According to Livestrong, there are three factors that affect the intensity of a snow shoveling workout:
1. The water content of the snow. Shoveling our famous Cold Smoke does not burn as many calories as wet, heavy snow (what we called Sierra cement in Reno). The heavier the snow the harder it is to pick up and throw. No doubt you noticed this over the weekend. 2. Time spent shoveling. Duh, thanks for pointing out the obvious Livestrong. The more time you spend shoveling the more calories you'll burn. 3. Using a snow blower. While blowing snow still burns calories, it's less than manual labor. A 185-pound person using a snow blower for 30 minutes burns only 200 calories, compared to 266 when shoveling by hand. Shoveling snow not only burns calories, it uses your strong CrossFit built muscles. It's truly a core to extremity workout! Your core must be engaged to help you push lift and throw. Your legs are engaged to help you balance, twist and throw. Your arms are engaged as you push, lift and throw. Are you noticing a trend? Living in snow country requires the ability to balance, lift, twist and throw. Aren't you glad we do all of those things on a regular basis at the gym? How much time did you spend shoveling your drive and walkway over the weekend? Share in the comments.

REGISTER BY TOMORROW AND RECEIVE A FREE SPARTAN RACE ENTRY! How SMART Are You?These past few weeks my blogs have focused on helping you create achievable goals. New Year's Resolutions are fun and sexy, and most of them have failed by now. This Friday is New Year's Resolution Ditch Day, the day when most folks fail on their resolutions. Will you make it to Friday with your NY Resolutions? That's why I'm not an advocate of NY Resolutions. Instead, I like to see folks make SMART goals. SMART goals are specific. Instead of saying you want to get to the gym consistently. Your SMART goal is to get to the gym 12 times this month. SMART goals are measurable. Attending 12 classes this month is a measurable goal where as going to the gym consistently is not. SMART goals have a plan. You will pack your gym bag the night before you plan to attend class. You will enroll in class and set a reminder on your phone. You will block out your schedule so no one can take your gym time away from you. SMART goals are meaningful to you because they move the needle in the direction you want to go. You want to attend 12 classes per month because you want to have a lower resting heart rate. A lower resting heart rate will reduce your risk of hypertension, heart disease and might reduce COVID symptom severity. SMART goals are time bound. You will attend 12 classes in January, and then 15 in February (because you'll attend Femme Fatale Week!). This is more specific than working on "being consistent". The best thing about a time bound goal? You have an end point and you know when you've achieved you goal! How great is that? How can you make your New Year's Resolutions into SMART goals? How can you make anything you want to do into a SMART goal? Share with us in the comments. I'm helping everyone create SMART goals for 2023 during our New Year Check in. Be sure to schedule yours! Festivus! One of my favorite stress management techniques is to have fun and be silly. The Festivus for the Rest of Us is my kind of silliness. Festivus is a made-up holiday featured in an episode of Seinfeld. It is celebrated on December 23rd each year by adoring fans everywhere. All this week I will highlight the 5 elements of Festivus: Festivus Pole, Festivus Dinner, Airing of Grievances, Feats of Strength, and Festivus Miracles. Watch the origin story of Festivus here: |
