What a difference a year makes! A year ago today we announced that we were closing our doors until April 3rd. Little did we know we would remain closed until May 15. We relied upon all of our mental toughness skills to survive the unknown and unknowable of the developing global pandemic. We could never have predicted how this would challenge us and provide a robust opportunity to develop into better humans, better business owners. better spouses, better friends and better leaders. Thanks COVID, you gave us an opportunity to become better! Speaking of becoming better, boy are you all in better shape that in you wear a year ago. It's been so fantastic to see all the PRs and firsts this month in the gym. We are also all kicking butt in the CrossFit Open! WOOHOOO! Here's the point spread after week 1. Both teams accumulated nearly the same pre-season points. with Team Summer has 16 people registered for The Open and 5 folks who completed the Judges Course. Team Winter has 15 people registered for The Open and 5 folks who completed the Judges Course. Both teams had 20 folks complete the workout. So how did Team Summer get such a big lead? Team Summer had 9 folks who finished in the top 3 of the Rx, Scaled or Foundations division and Team Winter had 7 top 3 finishers. You must enter your score on BTWB in order to be counted in the Top 3 finishers. Team Summer had 9 people did something for the first time and Team Winter had 5. Team Summer member Kerri won the Spirit of the Open which earned an additional 5 points for her team.
How can you earn big points for your team this Friday? Show up and do the workout. Choose the division which you have the best chance of placing in the top 3. Do something for the first time or get a PR. Best represent this week's theme, BEAST MODE, and earn 5 points for the Spirit of the Open.

Wellness Wednesday - Breathe Your Way to RelaxationI'm continuing our #coronaversary by revisiting the blogs I wrote from a year ago. It's pretty cool to see the health and wellness practices I shared with you as the world was shutting down, are just as relevant today as our world is opening back up.
A year ago this blog shifted to provide you with ONE thing you can do each day to remain healthy and happy. A year ago today, I encouraged you to slow down, breathe, and pay special attention to your body. I think you should do that again today:) When I was going through my cognitive behavioral therapy program for insomnia, one of the techniques I utilized to help me fall back to sleep was progressive muscle relaxation. I want you to try progressive muscle relaxation today. Progressive muscle relaxation is a stress management technique that enables you to focus on just one thing, your body. It's a great tool to use when you're stressed and find your attention is pulled in a million different directions. Perhaps you're feeling this way today? Progressive muscle relaxation works by progressively tensing and relaxation muscle groups throughout your entire body. You will tense each muscle group vigorously, but without straining, and then suddenly release the tension and feel the muscle relax. You can certainly just lie down and do this on your own. However, I find the best way to practice this technique is to follow a guided script. Here's one from Rebecca Boskovic of The Fittest Me. I first became aware of Rebecca through my Two Brain Business mentoring program. She is a CrossFitter and a dynamic #bosslady who has a terrific podcast. Click here to listen to her progressive muscle relaxation podcast. I hope it's the best 17 minutes of your day. Wow! What a year it's been. On this coronaversary I'm reflecting on the last week in the gym in March 2020 just before everything #shutdown.
A year ago today I blogged about strategies to help us stay sane amidst the chaos. Sometimes the blog is more for me than it is for you:) Things were changing RAPIDLY that week and I was trying to make the best decisions for your safety and the sustainability of the gym. It was not easy being the #bosslady and I was relying on daily exercise to keep me sane amidst the chaos. As Meg often says, exercise keeps the crazy out. A year ago this week we all needed to keep the crazy out! So, on this #transformationtuesday I'm exploring the transformation of the gym and our business. How has the coronavirus pandemic impacted us? On paper, the "left-brain" business metrics are dismal. During the past year we have lost 15% of our membership. We have suffered a consistent 30% revenue loss every month since the #shutdown. When we reopened in May we did so without our full team of in-person coaches. The pandemic impacted our staff and we had to create a new full-time role, Remote Coach, for the 15% of the gym who elected to stick with remote coaching rather than return to the gym. The "right-brain" business metrics are fantastic! We created a new business program and pivoted all our members from in person coaching to our remote coaching program. We created a new staff position to fully support this new business program. We were able to continue to employ and pay all of our coaches through the #shutdown and reopening. No one lost their job! 37 members stayed with us through remote coaching and reopening and are important and stable members of our community. We did not have a single case of COVID transmission at the gym. A year later and there's a shift. People are starting to emerge from their homes and return to the gym. Our members who stuck with us are fitter and healthier than a year ago. A year later and we are growing. We have restarted our Coach intern program and are excited about the MSU students who are learning how to be a strength and conditioning coaches with us. Keep your eyes open for Mattias and Keegan in class. A year later and we are stronger both physically and mentally. We have the largest participation in the CrossFit Open ever. We are ready to compete, have fun, and kick up our heels a bit (which we all did, over and over, against the wall for 21.1:) A year later and we are still hopeful that this will all end soon and we can return to partner workouts, sharing a barbell and playing a great round of musical med balls. Thank you for being a vital part of our TSCF community! Without you, we would have closed. A year ago everything changed. Our kids, our jobs and our lives were suddenly #shutdown due to the COVID pandemic. We had not yet closed the gym on March 15, but we knew it was inevitable. As we mark this one year of COVID pandemic, I am reflecting on the things I wrote on this blog. One year ago, the Monday before we shut down, I wrote a blog entitled: "Should You Quit the Gym?" A year ago today we reduced the class size from 12 to 10 to create a 3 foot buffer between everyone. The CDC guidelines limited group sizes to no more than 50. A year ago today about 10% of you already made the switch to remote coaching. Who knew that just 2 days later we would pivot everyone to remote coaching and develop a brand new business product to make sure you stayed healthy and happy during the #shutdown. A year ago today, when you asked me, "What about my gym memberships during the Coronavirus crisis?" This is what I said: 1. True Spirit CrossFit is probably cleaner than big all-access gyms. Those words hold true a year later. We are not yet fully opened, we are still operating at reduced capacity, keeping you all 6 feet (or further) apart, wearing masks when we can't keep our distance, cleaning everything after we touch it, setting up class for you so you don't have to walk around the gym and get equipment, monitoring carbon dioxide levels and increasing air ventilation when the minimum threshold is reached, and adjusting our programming so you continue to get fit, and can adhere to our COVID safety protocols.
Some day, probably sooner than we think, herd immunity will be reached. We will be able to rip the tape up from the floor, do a partner workout, high five and hug each other. I know I can't wait for that day. For all of you who have stayed with us since march of last year, we have a special gift for you at the gym. Thank you so, so very much for supporting True Spirit CrossFit. Without you, we would have closed. Enjoy today's workout! |
