Today's dangerous woman was first posted as the workout of the day on the CrossFit Main Site on January 10, 2021. She was the fifth of a series of new “Girl” benchmark WODs posted to the CrossFit Main Site in early 2021. She is one of three Femmes with burpees. This is such a surprise given how frequently burpees show up in other benchmark workouts. She's not the only new Femme who is visiting us for our special week. This lady's history is a bit blurry. We know she's been around at least since Nov 27, 2007 as that's when CrossFit published a video demo of her. She first appeared with a different box height (20” instead of 24” for men). However, if you search for her on the CrossFit Mainsite she is elusive. Perhaps that's part of her allure? In the CrossFit forum, user Mark Brinton attributed the workout to “CrossFit North” (CrossFit’s very first affiliate – near Bellevue, WA USA). Brinton first cited it in the CrossFit Forum on June 7, 2006 as one of the workouts that gym used to “evaluate new members.” How would you have liked your very first CrossFit workout to be the one were doing today? For the next 6 days, you will meet a different CrossFit Femme Fatale. You may find yourself laying on the ground, gasping for air, wondering the what the heck just happened to you. That is how Coach Glassman found himself after he did today's workout. He was so impressed by the devastating simplicity of this workout, he named it using the same convention that the National Weather Services names hurricanes. In fact, today's workout is named for one of the most powerful hurricanes. There will never again be a hurricane using this name. The damage caused by the storm was so severe that the National Weather Service retired the name. We hope you survive the pain-storm that today's workout is notorious for causing. Today's Workout First made her appearance on the CrossFit main site on November 21, 2004. "But the crushing charm of these ladies lies in their magnificent capacity to root out weaknesses and humiliate you with them. For many athletes the high rep deadlifts at 225 pounds, cleans at 135 pounds, and thrusters at 95 pounds are easy. For these same athlete's handstand push-ups, ring dips, and pull-ups are very likely deficiencies. Typically, these athletes are larger. Similarly, those athletes for whom handstand push-ups, pull-ups, and ring dips are a breeze are nearly certain to bristle at these loads and high reps in the weightlifting. Typically, these athletes are smaller. Do these workouts favor middleweights? It doesn’t seem so. The middleweights seem to suffer at both ends." - CrossFit 2004 |
