Firebreather = 1. One who faces the triumphs and tribulations of great physical opposition with an indomitable spirit. 2. An optimistic energy associated with the heart of an athlete.
Early CrossFittters, training with Coach Gassman in Stana Cruz, named themselves firebreathers after their first time doing Fran. "It felt like I was breathing fire the entire time," according to Greg Amundson, the original firebreather. Amundson was the first CrossFitter to explore the connection between sprit and intense physical activity. This is certainly something which which we can identify. In an interview, Amundson describes how he first made this connection, "It sounds crazy. But, I felt like when I really pushed it, I was getting closer to spirit. The harder I went, the faster I got, the stronger I became, I just felt like every time it was closer and closer to a place of stillness and truth and spirit." Have you every felt like that at the end of a CrossFit workout? Amundson created what many OG CrossFittters know as The CrossFit Way:
We hope you find your spirit in today's workout.

3/25 Myth Busting Monday - How to Think Critically About Things You See On the Internet...3/24/2024 ...Or, How to Spot BullshitIt's Myth Busting Monday and you may have noticed that I've been exploring how to wade through mis-information and silly bullshit so that you can critically explore the newest magic tonic, shake, or elixir that your Facebook friend is trying to sell you. Spring cleanses are all the rage now. I wrote about the pseudoscience of the cleanse last week. This week I want to share the 9 most common sales tactics quacks and charlatans use to get you to buy their magic cure. Do not be fooled. The Supplement industry is BIG BUSINESS. In 2021, the global supplement industry was worth 152 BILLION dollars. It has absolutely no quality control nor third party oversight. Unlike regulated pharmaceuticals, supplement companies have no obligation of testing for safety or efficacy. Literally anyone can make a miracle balm, salve, tonic, powder, or pill and sell it to you using all the language shown in the graphic below and it is not against any law. I think you, and I, deserve better. I think we deserve to know if the magic miracle balm, salve, tonic, powder, or pill actually works. Fortunately for us, we do have some resources so we can "do our own research" and we can use our fantastic critical thinking skills. Thinking is Power is one such resource. It's a project develop by a science educator at a Massachusetts community college to help her students learn science literacy, critical thinking, and information literacy. Having been a science educator myself, I appreciate what Thinking is Power is doing. Here is great information on the sales tactics used by many supplement companies. Do you recognize this type of wording and language? I've seen it on almost everything sold by quacks and charlatans. The graphic graphic below specifically uses 9 tactics to sell you their miracle cure. Can you identify them? How many did you identify? I'm sure all of us have seen products with one if not all of these claims. Here's a rundown of all 9 tactics for bamboozlement and swindling. 1. They ask you to commit - "Try it for 30 days free!" Critical thinking skills are fundamental to being able to successfully navigate life and not fall prey to charlatans, quacks and snake-oil salespeople. Want me to explore a myth? Suggest one in the comments.
What's for Dinner? Muscle Building Protein!
National Public Radio started a special series this year called, How to Thrive as You Age: the Science and Secrets of Longevity. The first episode aired January 29th and focused on a series of tests that can give us insight into our "Healthspan." I wrote about it here.
The most recent episode, Millions of women are 'under-muscled.' These foods help build strength aired on Monday, March 18. In it, Allison Aubrey, takes a deep dive into the importance of protein. She is following up on the episode in which she explores a recent study of 40,000 women that found a causal link between strength training and a 30% reduction in cardiovascular mortality. In that episode, Women Who Do Strength Training Love Longer. How Much is Enough? (and that I wrote about here) she notes that: "women who do strength training exercises two to three days a week are more likely to live longer and have a lower risk of death from heart disease, compared to women who do none."
However, Allison discovered that strength training alone isn't enough, it must be combined with enough protein to SUPPORT the activity. Simply, we must eat to support our training. She discovered that she was under-muscled and started to incorporate more protein into her diet. You can listen to the entire episode below:
She aimed for 90g of protein and found that one way she could easily achieve that by increasing her consumption of beans. Beans are an excellent source of fiber, carbohydrates and protein!
Beans are one of my favorite foods and I cook a big bean recipe every week. This weekend, rather than a big pot of a bean soup or stew I will make a cold bean salad to eat with canned tuna. Tuna is a fantastic source of lean protein and when combined with beans packs a big punch of muscle building protein. Click on the image below for a Rancho Gordo recipe for Italian white bean and tuna salad. I buy the creamy and luxurious Rancho Gordo Royal Corona beans at Fink's Deli. Fink's also carries Rancho Gordo's pink beans, black beans, garbanzo beans and lentils. If you make the recipe this weekend be sure to share a photo on our Facebook page. I'll give a bag of Rancho Gordo Royal Corona beans to the first person who does! Happy eating! Final Intramural Open Week 3Week 3 was classic CrossFit with a higher skill Fran AMRAP. All those pull-ups took their toll. Here's how the teams did. Team DC maintained their lead with 14 people completing 24.2. They had 10 people finish in the top 3 of their division. Team DC earned 58 points for 24.2. However, Team Marvel beat Team DC in 24.2. Seventeen people on Team Marvel completed 24.3. They had 8 people finish in the top 3 and they, AGAIN, earned this week's Spirit of the Open with Marianne bringing her A GAME for her final costume. Team Marvel earned 63 points for 24.3 to beat Team DC who earned 58. Here are your top 3 finishers in each division based on scores entered into BTWB. Rx Non MastersScaled Non MastersRx MastersScaled MastersThis week we did not have any scaled masters men or women completed 24.3 FoundationsSpirit of the OpenAll 5 points this week go to Marianne who had an outstanding costume. Team PointsTeam DC is the official winner of the 2024 Intramural Open with 250 points. They did not win every week, though. Team Marvel beat Team DC in 24.1 and 24.2 and finished the Intramural Open with 234 points. Team DC are the overall winners because they earned 48 pre-season points compared to Team Marvel's 31 points. Those pre-season points really do add up. Next year be sure to take the Judges Course. It's worth 5 points and it's how Team DC established and maintained their lead. New Thursday 5:30pm class starts today! |
