It's Mental Toughness Thursday and today we are exploring the story we tell ourselves. Nothing breaks my heart more than hearing someone in our gym talk poorly about themselves. I vacillate between giving two responses, one is a hug full of compassion and the other is hard shake full of compassion.
The story we tell ourself affects us in a profound way. If you tell yourself daily that your fat, slow, stupid, whatever, guest what - that is what you'll be. It is IMPOSSIBLE to affect change when you sabotage your efforts with negative self talk.
I once read a study about the power of positive thinking with children with cancer. These children were encouraged to create images of how they were beating their cancer. The kids drew pictures of friendly monsters eating away at their cancer, of super heroes inside their little bodies fighting their cancer. The power of these kids' images was amazing! The kids who visualized and imagined a positive outcome had significantly higher remission rates.
What we think we become. Let me say that again more slowly.

Today, when you start down the road of negative self talk, imagine I am there and I'm getting ready to shake you! Then, I want you to try this. Imagine you are sitting next to yourself on the couch. How would you feel as you listen to how you're talking about yourself? Would you talk to your best friend, spouse, or child this way? I bet not! Be your own best friend, change the story you tell yourself.
