The standard spring race distance for a rowing regatta is 2,000m. In the fall and winter however, there are many longer regattas, called head races (for the head of a river) and the most famous of the American head races is the Head of the Charles. The most famous European head race is the Henley Royal Regatta. Yes, this is where the Henley shirt originated.
The Head of the Charles regatta is 4,800m long and the best scullers (two oars) finish between 18-20 min. Today we will be rowing 5,000m, a classic head race distance. How will you compare? They key to finishing a head race is pacing! You must start and keep a pace you can keep the entire time. You can use a race start, but settle quickly to a pace that feels comfortable for the first two thousand meters. Good Luck! Click here for 2014 Head of the Charles results.
If a head race is not your thing, but you think you want to try an indoor 2k regatta. Check out the C.R.A.S.H-Bs. It's the most famous American indoor regatta and is growing in popularity, thanks to CrossFit:-) See how you stack up.
