What is the secret sauce? What is the ONE THING that will change your life? What is the KEY to happiness? YOUR MINDSET.
Mindset is everything, and I write about it every Thursday. Over the past few years I have shared, in addition to my own words, deep thoughts from people I trust and respect like Mark Divine, Ben Bergeron, CJ Martin and Don Miguel Ruiz. I recently learned about a New York Time article while listening to a Ben Bergeron podcast. The article, The Secret Ingredient for Success, distills mindset down to one simple truth, to be successful you must be willing to do a merciless self-examination.
The article's authors interviewed many high achievers and found that a merciless self-assessment was the one commonality. They found that,
"No one’s idea of a good time is to take a brutal assessment of their animating assumptions and to acknowledge that those may have contributed to their failure. It’s easy to find pat ways to explain why the world has not adequately rewarded our efforts. But what we learned from conversation with high achievers is that challenging our assumptions, objectives, at times even our goals, may sometimes push us further than we thought possible."
What assumptions do you hold true? They could be holding you back. If you start any sentence with, "But, I'm," or "I'm too," or "I'm so," or the most fatal assumption "I'm not," it's time to do a merciless self-assessment. If you continually fail to meet your objectives, e.g. CrossFit 3/week, complete the Whole Life Challenge, loose X pounds, lift Y weight, then you need to do a merciless self-assessment.
If you REALLY want to affect change in your life, you MUST examine your life. If you want to be happy, you need to get crystal clear on what will REALLY make you happy. I can tell you it's absolutely NOT loosing X pounds or lifting Y weight. It's loving yourself after you complete a merciless self-assessment. No guilt, no shame, no regrets. Take stock, be brutally honest, take new action. That's it. Good luck!
