Jessie focuses before she back squats. Your focal point will help you stay balanced under load and will put your head and spine in a safe and neutral position. Yoga practitioners practice using a Drishti or a place on which to focus, when performing yoga asana (physical poses.) A drishti is equally important in weightlifting. Weightlifting, just like yoga, requires balance and focus. A drishti can help you develop focus, stay in balance and make lifting weight easier. Your drishti should also put your body in the best position, and for nearly everything we do in weightlifting, having a neutral neck and spine is super important. Not only is spinal neutrality safe it is also a stronger position from which to lift. Check out today's Technique Tuesday video to learn where you should focus your gaze, and how to position your head when squatting.
