Happy Thursday everyone! We are almost done with the week and heading into a beautiful looking weekend! I will be writing this post in place of Brian today but continuing with the theme of farm to food. I personally feel that where our food comes from is just as important as what we are eating. It’s one thing to have nutritional goals such as eating 3,000 Calories a day or eating a certain amount of protein, fat, and carbs BUT we also need to pay attention to what that food actually is. It’s easy to eat 3,000 calories a day at Little Caesars Pizza or hit our goals of fat by eating a half gallon of ice cream. I’m sure that’s common sense to most of you and I bet that with your health in mind you try to consume your food in a healthy way. I’d like to challenge you to go one step further and consider where that food is coming from. For example, we all know that chicken is high in protein and is one of the healthier options if you choose to eat meat. Now, if you go to the store and buy Tyson chicken we don’t really know much about where that food is coming from. Chances are it is from an animal raised on a factory farm and pumped full of chemicals to make it grow bigger and last longer on the shelf. Buying that chicken from a local farm allows you to actually go the farm, see the conditions under which the animal was raised, and know that it doesn’t contain the same additives. I understand that this is a little more expensive way to go about shopping and eating but I would argue that the food you choose to put in your body is one of the most important choices you can make with your money. Not to mention it feels pretty good to support local businesses. Next time you’re at the grocery store keep an eye out for locally sourced foods.
On another note, I know that well all love to go out to eat every now and then. I’m going to give you guys a list of a few local restaurants that are known to support local farms and have really great food! Breakfast: Stormcastle Café- Stormcastle has amazing breakfast options and serves huge portions. They actually own their own farm where they source most of their food. Make sure you show up early as it’s very common for their wait to be over an hour. Feed Café- Feed has some great breakfast options and is great for on the go ordering. I highly recommend their breakfast sandwiches. Lunch: Little Star Diner: Little Star has great options for breakfast and lunch and is well known for supporting local farms and using high quality ingredients. Dinner: Montana Aleworks: Aleworks is a pretty popular restaurant around town that I’m sure most of you have heard of or been to. They have a huge dinner menu, outdoor seating, and buy a lot from local farms. Blackbird: Blackbird is an excellent restaurant on Main St., while it is a little pricy they have some of the best wood fired pizza in town! Feast Bistro: One of the higher end restaurants in town, Feast has a really creative menu that features a ton of locally sourced options. I know after a long week of hard work and big workouts in the gym I love to go out to eat and treat myself to a good dinner. It is nice to know that depending where I go, a lot of the food I’m eating was grown/raised here in Bozeman by people that I know. I highly recommend you guys check these places out or look for some other options around town that feature locally sourced products! Let me know when you find some good ones!
