This week's Whole Life Challenge weekly lifestyle challenge is to spend 10 minutes every day working on a mental challenge, puzzle or task. This challenge is important because, like our muscles and cardiovascular system, we loose mental capacity if we don't challenge ourselves. We can train our brains to work better, faster, etc. with challenges and puzzles like sudoku, crossword, etc.
The body's ability to improve brain function is called neuroplasticity. There is compelling research that suggests exercise can improve brain connections, thus improving our neuroplasticity. Exercise combined with a mental challenge can be even more effective at improving cognitive function. Have you played our Tabata word game or post-WOD rhyming challenge?
These short mental challenges improve our brain function by teaching us to think under pressure. Improving our mental capacity under physical stress can help us cope with other stressful life events. Stress management is probably the most important healthy lifestyle factor. Stress is devastating to our mental and physical well-being. Stress messes up our hormones, or cognitive ability and many other mental and physiological functions. The better equipped you are to handle stress, the better your quality of life. How fun that constantly varied, high intensity, functional movement exercise and a few brain challenges can improve your life?
