We kick off Honor Week with a workout that honors John Pettijohn and Coach Leslie. Both of us were aircraft firefighters, aka Crash Crew. John was crash crew in the US Air Force and I was crash crew in the US Marines. We both drove firefighting trucks, rushed into burning aircraft to rescue pilots and crew. John's duties also included structural firefighting.
John, Tech Sgt. Pettijohn, enlisted in the US Air Force in 1989. He served 10 years on active duty. He was deployed twice to Korea. John continued serving as a firefighter after his time in the military. He has worked as a wildland firefighter and is currently a medic for Life Flight in Butte.
Coach Leslie, Sgt. Allen, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1989 when she was 17 and celebrated her 18th birthday in bootcamp at Parris Island, South Carolina. She served 5 years on active duty and 3 years in the reserve. She filled endless sandbags during the Persian Gulf War (Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield) and spent her final year on active duty at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan where she was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant and summited Mount Fuji. She served in the USMC Reserves at Camp Pendleton, California while she attended Mira Costa Community College from 1994-1997.
This workout simulates the physical skills needed as an aircraft firefighter:
